Development Classic Fours
The inaugural Development Classic Fours tournament was held at the Victoria Bowling club over the weekend 24/25th September 2011, with a full field of some of the best 1-10 year players in the Wellington region contesting for the VBC Challenge Trophy (donated by double world gold-medalist Gary Lawson).
With teams required to play a variety of games (Fours, Standard Pairs, 2-4-2 Pairs) with forced rotation of positions, the format of the tournament was designed to test all aspects of the players games.
The first day of play was held in typical Wellington conditions (yes – it was blowing a gale….), and the second day requiried the use of wet-weather gear (there’s no point in buying the gear if you don’t get to use it).
The mens side of the competition was won by the team of Dave Pearce, Geoff Fox, Rowan Cuff and Rhys Hakkens.
The womens side of the competition was won by the team of Fiona McKinlay, Janeen Noble, Sue Way and Sarah Cooper.
These two teams met in a final to contest the VBC Challenge Trophy. Unfortunately the weather was such that this playoff had to be reduced to a 5-end shootout, with Dave Pearce’s team getting off to an early lead that the McKinlay team was unable to peg back (although not through want of trying).
