Congratulations to Ray Martin (in a very solid debut performance) and Rich Corry (who also co-selected the side) and the rest of the Hutt Valley Paterson Trophy team for winning the zone 4 indoor bowls intercentre event for a third year running and qualifying for the national intercentre finals (called the Welch Trophy) to be played at home in the Hutt on September 3rd-5th. This is a demanding event with each player playing 15 games made up of fours, singles and pairs in a test of focus, skill and endurance over a weekend. Hutt Valley will host Auckland, Waikato, North Taranaki, Canterbury and Otago in the national finals.

Nicole Toomey won the Hutt Valley indoor bowls Junior Singles for players 18 years and under. This was the first time Nic had played in the event and will now represent Hutt Valley in the national Junior singles finals to be played in Porrirua on August 28th. Competitors at that event may also get selected to play in a north v south zone Junior ‘test match’. Nic is already scheduled to play in the national secondary schools champs at the same venue over the following two days.

Congratulations to Nicole Toomey for winning the Wellington Regional College Indoor Bowls Singles for St. Mary’s, and Tim Toomey with former Victoria member Xavier Scott in winning the Pairs for St. Pat’s Wellington.

A national secondary schools indoor bowls competition will be held in Porrirua in August.

SCOTT AND TOOMEY SURPRISED BY WIN

A laidback approach paid off for rookie indoor bowls player Xavier Scott last week.

Scott, 17, teamed up with fellow St Pat’s Town student Tim Toomey to win the College Sport Wellington pairs title in the North Wellington Hall.

In the final, Scott and Toomey beat Luke Boyadjian and Alasdair Shariff, from Aotea College, 8-1.

The duo had not even expected to be competing in the championship competition, thinking they would play in the novice event.

“They didn’t have enough people for that, so they put us in the main one and we ended up winning it,” Scott said.

However, what started out for Scott as a casual thing has changed with the pair now qualified for the national indoor secondary school championships, which will be in Wellington from August 29-30.

“I’ll be taking it seriously now for the nationals,” Scott said.

Meanwhile, for the Toomey family there was a double reason for celebrating success at the championships with Nicole, 15, winning the singles title.

In one of the few sports that combines boys and girls entrants, Toomey beat Ben Tromp, of St Pat’s Silverstream, 17-1 in the final.

“I didn’t expect to win it,” she said. “I was quite pleased with how I did.”

As for playing against boys, Toomey, a year 11 student at St Mary’s College, has done it all before.

“I played the college outdoor [bowls] against the boys as well,” she said.

She will also compete in the national secondary schools indoor bowls championships.

For the Toomeys it is the second time they have qualified for a national secondary school championship.

In May they both qualified for the outdoor national secondary schools championships, which will be held in Dunedin from December 12-14.

Kay Carr and Richard Corry won the Hutt Valley Indoor Bowls Mixed Pairs title. This was the second time winning the title for both players but they had done this previously with different partners.

Congratulations to Raymond Martin and Richard Corry for winning the Wellington Catholic Open Pairs indoor bowls event for the third time in 5 years. The Victoria pair beat 2009 Hutt Valley Paterson Trophy squad members Trish Cherry and Marcus Trlin in the final after surviving a see-saw battle against another Paterson Trophy player from last year, Murray Larkin and his wife Colleen in the semifinal.

Raymond and Richard were also runner-up in the Hutt Valley Mixed Fours on Saturday including a win over Joseph Zino’s eventual winning team.

Its a late gold rush for Victoria this season with Kirsten Griffin, Lisa White and Leigh Griffin picking up our second centre title in three weeks winning the Wellington Champ-of-champ Triples. The girls were in great form winning the semifinal 22-9 against Silverstream and the final 23-9 over Woburn to take the championship.

Well done Lou Newman and Roy Gibb for winning the Wellington 2-4-2 Easter Pairs! The big game in their path to the final was definitely the quarterfinal on home ground at Victoria in the fading light Sunday evening against Johnsonville’s Mark Noble and Rob Ashton. Having worked themselves to a position of three ahead going into the last end, it wasn’t looking good with one bowl to play 7 down on the head! But Roy’s run shot somehow managed to disturb enough and stay on the head to cut it down to 2 for the win.

Prospects weren’t looking to good at 9-2 down in the final either to Titahi Bay’s Phil Todd and Joe October but the Vic lads scratched their way back into the game picking up singles and twos on a tricky rink to slowly claw their way on top for a 12-9 win. After a couple of Wellington event runner-ups last season, this was Roy’s first Wellington centre title, and Lou’s ninth. The Easter 2-4-2 pairs format introduced in 1998 seems to agree with Victoria – we have won the title 5 times now in the last 11 years including a previous win for Lou in 1999.

Five of the six mens Victoria pairs qualified with Wayne Coleman and Jeremy Kydd reaching the quarterfinals.

A belated congratulations and well done to Kay Carr who skipped the four for the Wellington City womens team in the recent Masters representative tournament in Masterton. Wellington won the six-team competition.

Alf De Munnik and Peter Toomey were involved a week earlier in Wanganui in the Wellington City mens team who finished third on countback in their Masters competition.

Congratulations to Jamie Coleman, Raymond Martin, Richard Corry and Rich’s uncle Phil Dickison on winning the Wilton Invitation Classic. The team won seven out of their eight matches to win the tournament by a point and earn a cool 1G each. Things were tense in the final game to secure the tournament win until they scored a maximum eight shots on the sixth end.

Wellington East Girls College have been coming to the Victoria club over recent Tuesday afternoons for coaching and an introduction to the game. Hayley May, with a few helpers, has been taking the girls through the basics of bowls to prepare them for battle in the Wellington College Sport bowls competitions held on Thursdays at various clubs. The college has entered an incredible 11 teams in three different grades which also feature Tim Toomey’s St. Pat’s Wellington team in the Premier Division, and Nicole Toomey’s St. Mary’s team in Girl’s Division 1.
