Well done again Ray!

A week after winning a Catholic national title, Ray Martin impressed again in his first ever national indoor bowls tournament reaching the quarterfinals of the national singles in Taupo. He backed this up the next day with a creditable round of 16 result in the pairs with Rich Corry. Pictured is Rich in action in the Academy match playing for the Southern Zone fours team against Northern Zone.

Congratulations on a huge effort from Raymond Martin at the Catholic National Indoor Bowls Champs in Porrirua at the weekend. Ray reached the semifinals of the singles before being knocked out by the eventual winner Helen Burnley (who also plays out of the Hutt Valley Centre), and then with partner Jeff Stuart, won the pairs title! Ray was not far off being player of the tournament!

Tim Toomey won the Regional Secondary Schools singles at the Johnsonville club in a tough final against Euan Wong from Petone Central 14-7. One end was killed 7 times! Tim will play in the national secondary schools finals in December in that great nursery of NZ bowls – Dunedin!

Nicole Toomey came third in the girls singles going down in the semifinal by 1 shot. Nicole is first emergency if one of the finalists cannot go to Dunners.

Mandy Boyd is the 2010 Kittyhawks under 20 champion winning the final in a tiebreak over Nelson’s Misty Arnold. Mandy played well throughout the tournament winning 6 out of 7 in section play. Last year’s champion Kirsten Griffen was knocked out in the quarterfinals in a tiebreak to another Nelson player Julia Hodgson.

Raymond Martin battled through section play with 4 out of 7, then hit a purple patch with easy round of 16 and quarterfinal victories before taking out a tight semifinal encounter. He was knocked over in the final by an on-fire Scott Evans from Auckland but was ‘pretty happy’ with his efforts over the weekend.

History made in Birkenhead – well done Kirsty & Mandy!

It took eight years, but New Zealand finally beat Australia at the Under-18 level over the weekend at the Birkenhead club (North Harbour). It took a fighting performance from Kirsten Griffin to come from behind on the third day in her singles game to help the New Zealand team make history. And a dominant performance from Mandy Boyd skipping the Under-25 Women’s team lead them to a more comfortable victory over their trans-Tasman foes.

DAY ONE RESULTS:

Under-25 Women’s Fours, round 1: Australia beat New Zealand (Mandy Boyd (s)) 15 – 13

Under-25 Women’s Triples, round 1: New Zealand (Mandy Boyd(s)) beat Australia 19 – 16

Overall result 2-2, Australia wins test on countback

Under-18 Women’s Pairs, round 1: New Zealand (Emma Le Lievre (s) & Kirsten Griffin) beat Australia (Lisa Phillips (s) & Carly Griffiths) 23 – 18

Under-18 Women’s Singles, round 1: Kirsten Griffin (NZ) beat Carly Griffiths (Aus) 21 – 13

Overall result 2-1 New Zealand

Programme Update: Kittyhawk Regional Qualifier Postponed

The Programme page has been updated through to mid-February.

Players should also be arranging catch-up matches for all remaining section play games in the Mens Champ Fours and Mens Champ Junior Singles.

Although not officially declared on the Bowls Taranaki or Wellington websites, we have heard that the Kittyhawk Regional Qualifying event which was to be held in Taranaki on 16th January, has now been postponed until March due to a lack of available greens. We will endeavour to keep you updated on developments regard this.

Well done and good luck to Nina De Munnik and Kay Carr who will play in the semifinals of the National Womens Fours Friday morning at 8.30am against Barbara MacGregor from the United club in Nelson.

And also well done to Hayley, Lisa and Leigh for reaching the quarterfinals of the Fours. Leigh’s team went down on an extra end, while Hayley and Lisa’s team lost out on an umpire’s measure in their respective matches.

The men didnt do so well…

Well done to Hayley May and Kay Carr for reaching the last 16 of the National Open Womens Pairs Championships on Sunday. Hayley played with Tawa’s Dale Lang, and Kay, playing under the Johnsonville banner, was paired with Johnsonville’s Janet Nehemia.

Good luck for all for the Fours starting Tuesday. Lets hope for a drop in the wind…
