About

emblem.2 AboutHISTORY: More than 100 years ago 12 of Wellington city’s gentlemen met in the City Hotel and passed a motion that a bowling club be formed.

A Seven year lease was signed on July 1, 1896 and the original clubhouse was sited On Claremont Grove, Mt Victoria.

Issues of the day included the ongoing contemporary problem of unpaid membership, greens being mowed on the Sabbath, and in 1915, when Mr J Besant gave notice of intended motion that ‘the club at once discontinue supplying spirituous liquor and that the bar be closed.’

At the 1951 annual general meeting the club resolved to negotiate with the Wellington City Council for a new site with two greens. The location was to be the Pirie St Reserve where we find the club today.
