Well done Roy, Brad, Rich & Rangi!

Congratulations to Roy Gibb, Bradley Down and Richard Corry for winning the Wellington Catholic Open Triples indoor bowls title last week at the St.Bernard’s School in Brooklyn. The trio knocked over the Vogelmorn team of Maree and Kevin Crighton and Marcus Trlin 9-7 in the final after having also beaten them in section play earlier in the night. This was Richard’s 11th Wellington Catholic title and a 1st title for Roy and Bradley.

The trio then went on to secure the Hutt Valley Interclub B grade title for Victoria along with the services of Neil Reid on Monday night at Naenae. The competition came down to the last night and the last game of singles won by Brad. The team will now play in the Greater Wellington Champ of Champ Interclub next month against the winners of the Upper Hutt and North Wellington competitions.

Well done Rich & Brad!

It was another near thing when Richard Corry fell in the final of a PBA Ranking Singles event at the Heretaunga Club in Hastings this month to NZ number one Murray Glassey (Hawkes Bay). Rich has had a number of close finals against Murray over the years and was up a set only to go down 11-6, 6-7, 0-2 in a tiebreaker to his nemesis. Rich played well all day knocking over clubmates Ray Martin and Bradley Down on the way.

Bradley’s performance reaching the semifinal may have racked up enough ranking points to make the NZ PBA team to play the Australian PBA next year but this won’t be decided until Finals Weekend at Naenae on 8-10th September.

Ray reached the quarterfinals of the International Singles qualifier the next day and may have done enough to capture the NZ PBA Rookie of the Year trophy. Tim Toomey also made the quarterfinal stage.

Well done Brad, Laurie, Rich & Steve!

18-year old Bradley Down went down in a battle of the young guns in the final of the NZ PBA World Indoor Singles qualifier at Club Hastings late last month losing to Hawkes Bay’s 23-year old Dean Drummond in a tight affair 7-7, 9-7. Drummond came through Victoria players in the quarterfinal onward beating Ray Martin, Richard Corry in the semifinal, then Bradley. Bradley also came through Victoria players beating Tim Toomey in the quarterfinal and Laurie Guy in the semifinal.

It was another good weekend for Bradley in his hunt for ranking points to make next year’s Trans-Tasman side as he lost at the quarterfinal in the ranking singles event the previous day as well.

Former Victoria player Stephen Zino won his second qualifier of the season at the Paritutu club in New Plymouth with another dominant display of draw bowls beating Taranaki’s Rhonda Adams in the final. No doubt Stephen will be practicing hard at the Naenae club when the indoor green opens for PBA Finals Weekend in September.
