9 end singles on Monday!

Hello

As mentioned in the club book, this Monday on Waitangi Day we have our Nine End Singles competition on at the unusually sensible time of 12.30pm. Open for boys, girls, and anything inbetween.
You can write your name on the blackboard at the club, or if not going to be up at the club, email me at colvinator@gmail.com and I’ll put you up when I’m up there.
Format is three games of 9 end singles. Then the top 4 ranked players play semi-final and final. Has been a fun afternoon in the past.
Cheers
Colvin

Well done Ladies!

The Victoria Premier side won the Wellington Women’s Interclub on Saturday coming through in the playoffs at Hutt in a last gasp effort over Naenae. Victoria and Naenae were even on 31 points going into a dramatic final round. The Victoria four of Robyn Rintoul, Nina De Munnik, Kay Carr and Nicole Toomey scored a bonus point over Naenae, however the Naenae single and pair also won bonus point victories. This meant Victoria still needed points from both the singles and pairs. Helen King in the singles fought back from 7-17 and 17-24 to win a remarkable 25-24. Sarah Taukamo and Leigh Griffin were comfortably up but had to stave off a fightback against them before Leigh ran a jack in the ditch to secure a draw and the overall championship for our club. So Victoria finished with 50 points to Naenae’s 47. Our women including reserve Yvonne Gibb will now play in the NZ National Interclub in Auckland in March at the Howick and Pakuranga clubs.

The Victoria men also performed well but were not able to break through in three close losses to the defending national champs Eastbourne. Our team of Neville Rodda in the singles, Laurie Guy and Ray Martin in the pairs, Alf De Munnik, Richard Corry, Tim Toomey and Lou Newman came in a solid second not losing a match to either of the other clubs. Victoria slightly increases its lead in the unofficial club of the year race.

Well done Rich, Ray, Laurie, Nic & Robyn!

Victoria had a fantastic Wellington Open Singles with several players featuring in post-section play. Richard Corry picked up his gold star with a 5th Wellington title beating Ray Martin in the final. Ray had earlier accounted for Laurie Guy, while Rich beat former Victoria player Neil Barron (Hawkes Bay) in the other semifinal.

And Victoria had two in the women’s semifinals with Nicole Toomey going down to Kaaren Guilford (Johsonville) and Robyn Rintoul losing to Kimberley Hemmingway (Naenae).

The men are now in first place in our unofficial Wellington club of the year points.

R.I.P Mercia

The club mourns the passing of Mercia Downes. Mercia was instrumental in creating a women’s section at Victoria after the adjacent Mt Victoria Women’s Club had gone into recess. Mercia held many positions including concurrent roles as Bowls Wellington Women’s Selector and VBC Secretary in recent years.
