Well done Pete and Rich!

Congratulations to Peter Rintoul and Richard Corry for defending their Wellington Catholic Open Pairs indoor bowls title at the old Berhampore club on Thursday night. They won the final comfortably over Shelley Jacombs and Denise Clarkson (Vogelmorn) with one end to spare. This was Peter’s 3rd Wellington Catholic title and gave Richard his 10th.

Richard carried on the good form reaching the last 8 of the Masters Invitation Singles indoor bowls at the Western Hall in Auckland on Saturday before going down to Paul Voorend (North Wellington) 8-9. This prestige event invites representative level players from around the country.

Invitation Pairs washed out

For the second time in its history the Speight’s Victoria Invitation 2-4-2 Pairs was abandrob ashtononed today with persistent overnight and morning heavy rain making it impossible to attempt preparation of the greens. Division 1 and 2 money was shared out between the 8 teams in each Division.

Tournament control did very well to get through three shortened games on the Saturday. Many late pullouts, travel disruptions and rain during the middle of the day made for trying conditions. Last year’s champions Robbie Bird and Jayden Ravji had time to show they were no flash in the pan beating 5 time champion Gary Lawson playing with Justin Goodwin by 9 shots.

Early money has gone on last year’s 100-1 outsiders Robbie Bird and Jayden Ravji pulling off another win in this year’s 20th Speight’s Victoria Invitation 2-4-2 Pairs. They are not so much a dark horse this year starting at 26-1 in the odds.

The defending champs will need to get through 5 time champion Gary Lawson and partner Justin Goodwin in section play. The favourites on the TAB are current internationals Shannon McIlroy and Mike Kernaghan.

The field also includes former champion pairs Steve Glavas and Rex Holmes, and Ray Boffa with Rob Ashton.

Lets hope for a break in the weather!

Well done Laurie!

Congratulations timg_0149o super sub Laurie Guy who was brought into the Scotty’s Meats NZ Professional Bowls Association team to play the Australian PBA at the Heretaunga Club in Hastings at the start of the month. Laurie benefitted from last year’s individual champion Ken Walker wrecking his achilles in a gardening accident making the most of it.

The whole NZ team started slowly losing the first round but Laurie then became the only kiwi in two years to beat Ben Twist in the preliminary rounds. Twist is the only player from either country to play in all seven years of the event. Laurie went on to beat the third best Aussie Ray Pearse, and Steve Halmai to finish top of the kiwis and therefore play in the main final against Twist.

The Aussies stepped it up in the finals winning all three matches but because he was the best kiwi, Laurie is an automatic invite to next year’s event in Australia!
