Well done Roy, Kay & Rich!

Roy Gibb, Kay Carr and Richard Corry, teaming with Denise Clarkson (Vogelmorn) playing as third, won the Hutt Valley Mixed Fours on Saturday at the Hutt club and will represent Hutt Valley at regional playoffs in Upper Hutt in July for this NZ Federation indoor bowls national event. The Victoria team beat the defending champ team skipped by Joseph Zino in the final round of the round-robin competition to go through unbeaten. Zino’s team were upset earlier in the day which meant the Victoria team only needed to win 4 ends in the final which they did in the first 4 ends!

Kay was the only member of the team to have previously won a Mixed Fours title doing so in the North Wellington centre in a team skipped by Neil French “many years ago”.

Well done Alf/Laurie, Wayne & Lou!

Victoria picked up its 7th Wellington centre title of the season at Naenae on Saturday with Alf De Munnik (subbing in for an injured Laurie Guy), Wayne Coleman and Lou Newman completing the 3rd mens/womens Victoria double of the season winning the Champion of Champions Triples 18-16. The Victoria team built up an early lead and held a buffer throughout the game but were never able to pull further away from the Wilton team of John Gray, Howard Ivory and John Earles. The last three ends see-sawed with wilton closing the gap to one on the 16th end scoring a 4. Victoria picked up a 4 on the 17th to  re-establish a 5-point lead for the last end but were again down 4 shots on the final end before Lou drove twice to reduce to make a five impossible.

This gave Lou his tenth Wellington Centre title with his bar to his Gold Star coming 15 years after his first Centre title in 1995-96. Wayne now has 6 Centre titles and Laurie will probably be awarded his 2nd awaiting a confirmation from the Centre.

Well done Lisa!

A very big well done to Lisa White in her debut Test appearance for New Zealand against Australia in the indoor bowls test series played in Balclutha. Lisa came through incredibly well winning the Womens Singles Australasian medal on a countback of ends (1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw), and the Womens 8-bowl Pairs Australasian medal with Fiona Wilson (Tauranga) 2 & 1/2 matches to a 1/2. Unfortunately Australia retained the overall Trophy after match points were drawn 33-33 after a great fightback from New Zealand on the final day.

The women’s singles between new cap Lisa White, Upper Hutt Valley and Monika Korn, New South Wales was a titanic struggle. On the first day Korn got away to the best start but White fought back going down 19-21. On the second day with White’s nerves more settled they fought out a 15-15 draw which meant that White needed to win by three points on the third day to win the Australasian title on a count back. However in a great match White appeared to have the title in hand when she led 24-17 with two ends to play in the 25 end game. Korn refused to lie down and scored a two and three, White winning the match in identical style to day one 24-22. So it went to a count back on ends with White having scored on one more end than Korn 38-37 to win the medal.

In the women’s pairs Lisa White combined with skip Fiona Wilson, Tauranga to once again shine. Both players have represented the North Island as a combination for some years. They drew the first game against Monika Korn and Julie Zaporozec 17-17 then scored a narrow 19-18 win on the second day and finished with a convincing 19-3 win to win the Australasian medals.

Well done Roy and Rich!

A good effort to Roy Gibb and Richard Corry reaching the semifinals of the North Wellington Open Fours at Onepoto. Teamed with Jonathan Osten and John Zino they lost on an extra end to eventual winner Lois Randall also from the Hutt Valley centre.
